Unusual Ways of Facial Recognition Applications

1. Beer festival:
Twenty-five wanted criminals were arrested at an annual beer festival in Qingdao, China. People with criminal records or history of drug abuse were refused entrance after computers spotted them. The eighteen installed cameras at four entrances had an accuracy rate of 98.1 per cent.

2. KFC predicts customers’ orders:
Teaming up with Alipay – a mobile payment firm backed by Alibaba – facial recognition is being used in KFC restaurants in the eastern city of Hangzhou. It uses the “smile to pay” system to give customers a seamless payment process by keeping their wallets in their pockets after ordering because the machine compares customer’s face with the verified picture on their Alipay account.

3. Prevent acholic sale to underaged:
One of Budgens stores installed facial recognition to identify underaged children trying to purchase cigarettes and alcohol. The system collects a database of customers, and it alerts the cashier if it recognizes someone who has previously been unable to prove they are 18
