DJI Spark - Affordable Premium Drone

A couple of days ago, on May 24, DJI officially announced the Spark at the New York event. The new drone is very portable and compact, the footprint of the main body is smaller than most smartphones these days and it is about the size of an adult's palm. However, the DJI Spark has fixed propeller arms and cannot retract, which is a great feature in DJI Mavic Pro. To make up that drawback, a headphone-size carrying case will be provided.

With the price tag of $499, the tiny drone is packed with DJI's signature features such as TapFly, ActiveTrack, Mechanical Gimbal for the camera and 3D sensing system. But the coolest one, in my opinion, is the hand gesture controls. With only your hands, gesture controls the machine through the air from take-off to landing; you have the power to snap photos or control its position. with a basic gesture.

Hand gestures include:

  • Wave to send drone out approximately 10 feet
  • Create a box with your fingers to snap a photo
  • Two handed wave and hold out your hand to trigger landing
  • And much more...

Camera modes:
With DJI GO 4 app, newly introduced Quickshot features include several flying modes.

Rocket - camera faces downward and the drone rockets straight up.

Dronie - camera faces the subject and flies slowly upward and backs away.

Circle - camera keeps a focus on the subject and flies around it in a circle.

Helix - camera keeps a focus on the subject and both flies outward, upward and circles around.

Looking at the specifications, the DJI Spark has a camera sensor of 1/2.3-inch and shoots in 1080P. DJI says the Spark will go up to 31MPG in Sport Mode and a maximum flight time of 16 minutes in regular mode.

Lastly, the DJI Spark starts at $499 and there is a bundle version available for $699. You can choose from five different colors, white, blue, green, yellow and red.
